Immigration - a letter from the Regional Minister
The Federal Government’s recent executive actions on immigration have raised concerns for many of us, especially regarding their impact on our congregations and ministries. Conflicting reports have caused confusion—some suggest new executive authority to enter churches and schools, while others state that only violent criminal undocumented immigrants are being targeted. At this time, we believe that ICE will continue to recognize churches, schools, and hospitals as safe spaces.
The Most Urgent Need: Legal Support for Immigrants & Refugees
Right now, the greatest immediate need is ensuring that immigrants and refugees within the sphere of our ministries have access to reliable & adequate legal representation. Unfortunately, fear has created greater opportunity for fraudulent attorneys and notaries to take advantage of vulnerable individuals. Below are two important resources highlighting these dangers:
Additionally, the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) has published resources to combat immigration provider fraud, including a pamphlet on how to identify and avoid fraudulent services. The ILRC also provides Red Cards, which offer guidance on interacting with ICE or Border Patrol.
Trusted Legal Resources
We continue to compile trusted legal service providers throughout our region. Many of the sources we have found serve portions of our region so collecting them is a process. Below are some organizations offering legal assistance:
Texas (Statewide)
New Mexico (Statewide)
Southern New Mexico
San Antonio Area
South Texas
North Texas
The General expression of our church has pulled together several resources to use to help. You can find additional resources on the Immigration page of Disciples.org.
Ways to Support
We encourage you to support two vital ministries doing crucial work in this area:
How Congregations Can Respond
At this time, reports suggest that ICE or Border Patrol interactions at places of worship will be rare, if at all. We encourage congregations to continue being places of welcome and refuge for all. However, for those seeking to take extra precautions:
Mark spaces as "private" – it is our understanding that ICE agents can only enter public spaces without a warrant.
Designate a point of contact – Ideally, the pastor or a trusted leader should be the one to interact with ICE if they arrive.
Limit the information shared – Church members should be advised that they are not required to answer questions. Every person, regardless of immigration status, has the right to remain silent.
A Closing Word of Faith & Love
As we navigate these challenging times, let us be reminded of 1 John 4:16-18:
“We know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them… But perfect love drives out fear.”
Our prayer for you is that your congregations and ministries will continue to make the Love of God your foundation and your proclamation and that it show up in each aspect of your ministry.
